Long Queues Hit Lorry Stations as Commuters Battle Morning Traffic in Accra

Story: Maurice Otoo

Commuters in parts of the Greater Accra Region were left stranded for hours on Monday morning as long queues formed at major lorry stations, particularly at Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality.

Passengers hoping to travel to destinations such as Madina, Accra Central, Kasoa, Kaneshie and surrounding communities were forced to wait for several hours in a bid to secure commercial vehicles.

The situation, according to commuters, was worsened by heavy traffic congestion on several key road networks, making it difficult for vehicles to complete trips and return to pick up new passengers.

“In order to get a vehicle, you have to join a very long queue and wait for hours,” one commuter lamented. “Even after waiting, there is no guarantee you will get a car early.”

Some passengers told Kessben reporters they had been standing in queues for over two hours without getting any available vehicles to convey them to their destinations.

The persistent traffic congestion continues to disrupt economic activities, leaving many workers late for work and increasing frustration among daily commuters in the capital.

Notwithstanding, this situation enhances most trotro drivers to unduly charge exhobitant fares before allowing passengers onboard their vehicles.

” The fare from Amasamam to Accra is supposed to be ghc 7.00 but we are charged ghc 10.00.

In some instances they load from Amasamam to Pokuase and charge ghc 3.50, then from Pokuase to Achimota and take ghc 5.00, and charge ghc 6.00 from Achimota to Accra, they noted”

Authorities are yet to officially comment on the situation, but commuters are calling for improved traffic management and transportation planning to ease the growing pressure on public transport systems.

This situation is not different from the Aayalolo Bus terminal in Amasamam although commuters testified that the buses have been coming intermittently but the queues keep piling.

Speaking to Kessben media, some commuters shared their plight saying the situation is very frustrating and tiring and therefore plead with the government to increase the number of buses in easing long queues at terminals.
