Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in collaboration with Newmont Ghana reclaim 800 acres of land destroyed by Illegal mining in Manso Nyankomase

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, in collaboration with Newmont Ghana, has successfully reclaimed 800 acres of land that were heavily degraded by illegal mining activities at Manso Nyankomase in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking on Kessben FM during a discussion with Wofa Kofi Appiah, the Minister’s spokesperson, Mahmud Kabore, said the initiative forms part of government’s broader strategy to restore lands destroyed by galamsey and promote sustainable land use. According to him, the reclaimed land had suffered severe environmental damage, including loss of vegetation, polluted water bodies, and unsafe pits left behind by illegal miners.
Mahmud Kabore explained that the reclamation exercise involved backfilling dangerous pits, reshaping the land, and replanting trees to restore the natural ecosystem. He praised Newmont Ghana for its technical and financial support, describing the partnership as a strong example of how government and the private sector can work together to address environmental challenges.
He further emphasized that the Ministry remains committed to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring that communities affected by illegal mining regain safe and productive land. The project at Manso Nyankomase, he noted, should serve as encouragement for similar collaborations across other mining-affected areas in the country.
