Wa Airport in Sight: Airport Infrastructure Levy to Fund Regional Aviation Projects

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the introduction of an Airport Infrastructure Levy aimed at funding the construction of new airports across Ghana, including a new airport in Wa, Upper West Region.
Speaking on Saturday 31st January, 2026 during the official launch of the Upper West Shea Park Resource Hub Project in Wa, President Mahama explained, “Recently, we passed the Airport Infrastructure Levy. This levy imposes a fee on international air tickets, tickets within Africa, ECOWAS region, and domestic flights. The funds collected will be used to develop airports across the country.”

The President highlighted the importance of modern airports in supporting regional development and improving connectivity. “With the construction of a new airport, Wa and the Upper West Region will be better connected to the rest of the country and the world. This is a major step toward promoting trade, investment, and regional growth,” he said.
President Mahama also addressed concerns about the location of the new airport in Wa, noting that careful planning is underway. “A site for the new airport was allocated years ago, and officials recently inspected it. Construction will begin soon. This is about ensuring the greatest benefit to the people of the Upper West Region,” he said.
The levy will serve as a dedicated fund for airport development, ensuring sustainable financing for infrastructure projects. “This is not just about building airports; it is about creating opportunities, supporting tourism, and strengthening our national economy,” the President emphasized.
In addition to the airport levy, President Mahama outlined other key regional development projects, including road construction, market modernization, and agro-industrial initiatives such as the Upper West Shea Park Resource Hub. “These projects collectively reflect our commitment to ensuring no part of Ghana is left behind in our development agenda,” he said.
The Airport Infrastructure Levy has received support from parliament and is part of the government’s broader vision to modernize Ghana’s transportation infrastructure while driving economic growth and regional integration.
