Police reject GH¢5000 bribe from taxi driver arrested with narcotics

The police, acting on intelligence received, have arrested a taxi driver for allegedly transporting suspected narcotic substances.

The suspect was intercepted while driving a taxicab from Dzolokpuita in the Ho West District toward Ho. A search conducted by the police revealed 37 parcels of dried leaves believed to be marijuana concealed beneath the back seat of the vehicle.

The driver, identified as 36-year-old Innocent Kpeglo, was immediately arrested and placed in custody. The vehicle involved, an Opel taxicab with registration number CR 675-12, has also been impounded.

Confirming the arrest, the Deputy Superintendent of Police in charge of the Ho West District, DSP Rockson Gyasi, explained that officers acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off about the vehicle transporting contraband.

According to DSP Gyasi, at about 5:57 a.m., the vehicle was sighted on the road. Upon noticing the police presence, the driver pulled over and opened the bonnet, pretending the car had developed a mechanical fault.

When officers approached him, Kpeglo allegedly admitted that he was transporting the suspected narcotics to a recipient in Aflao. DSP Gyasi further disclosed that the suspect attempted to bribe the officers with GH¢5,000 to avoid arrest, but the offer was firmly rejected.

The police subsequently conveyed the suspect to the Anyirawase Police Station, where a more detailed search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the concealed parcels.

Kpeglo was later transferred to the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho and is currently being processed for court on charges related to the possession of narcotic substances.
