Supreme Court throws away Tamale High Court ruling, restores Nyindam of NPP as Kpandai MP

The Supreme Court has delivered a decisive victory to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the protracted Kpandai parliamentary case, setting aside the earlier decision of the Tamale High Court that had annulled the election. The ruling, given on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, was reached by a 4–1 majority.

As a result of the judgment, Matthew Nyindam, the NPP’s Member of Parliament for Kpandai, is set to resume his duties in Parliament. His legal team is required to formally serve the ruling on Parliament to finalize the reinstatement process.

The Supreme Court’s decision effectively reverses the High Court’s judgment, which had nullified Nyindam’s victory after a petition by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Daniel Nsala Wakpal. That earlier ruling had ordered a rerun of the election, slated for December 31, 2025, but the process was halted after Nyindam sought intervention from the Supreme Court under its supervisory powers.

Before the verdict was announced, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections, Tanko Rashid, popularly known as Tanko Rashid-Computer, had expressed optimism about his party’s prospects, telling journalists at the court that the NDC was confident of winning the case.

With the Supreme Court’s ruling now settled, the NDC is expected to accept the outcome, bringing to a close a months-long legal contest over the Kpandai seat. The judgment concludes a closely followed case that tested the country’s electoral dispute resolution mechanisms, clearing the way for Matthew Nyindam’s full return to Parliament.
