English is not the only measure of intelligence – Rev. Vincent Kankam advocates for L1 Education
Speaking on his show on Kessben FM, Rev. Kankam described this belief as erroneous, arguing that true intellect is better measured by understanding, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills rather than language alone.
He noted that overemphasis on English often undermines children’s ability to fully grasp concepts, especially at the early stages of education.
Rev. Kankam therefore called for the major use of L1 (first language or mother tongue) in teaching and learning.
He explained that research and global experience show that children learn faster and think more clearly when taught in a language they naturally understand.
He further cited examples of many successful nations that prioritize their indigenous or national languages in education and have achieved remarkable results in innovation, development, and academic performance. According to him, strengthening L1 education does not weaken English proficiency but rather builds a solid foundation for multilingual competence.
