Bawku Conflict: KPC Welcomes Otumfuo’s Mediation, Calls for Peace

The Kusaug Peoples Congress (KPC) has welcomed with renewed hope the report of the mediation initiative led by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, aimed at resolving the Bawku conflict. In a statement released on 15th January 2026, the KPC expressed its appreciation for Otumfuo’s leadership and commitment to national harmony, emphasizing that his mediation offers renewed hope for truth and triumph in the region.
The KPC also commended the Government of Ghana under President John Dramani Mahama for implementing the recommendations from the mediation report and introducing the Bawku Revitalisation Fund as a positive initiative bridging peace and development. “We hope that the Government will not take its eyes off the ball in consolidating peace in Bawku,” the statement read.
In a call for reconciliation among feuding factions, the KPC appealed to all groups and individuals involved in violence to lay down their arms and embrace peace. “The laying down of arms is a sacred act of repentance, renewal, and commitment to life,” the statement emphasized, specifically calling on Mamprusi youth to follow the example of Kusasi youth and pursue dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
“The future of Bawku lies not in violence, but in unity and mutual respect,” said Dr. A. Agoswin Musah, Interim Secretary of KPC. “We have inflicted enough pain and harm on each other and on innocent people and must now muster the courage to reach out to one another for healing and reconciliation.”
The KPC also expressed deep mourning over the continued loss of innocent lives, including an attack on a bus near Walewale, and urged the Interior Minister and security agencies to continue enforcing the law firmly, fairly, and professionally. “Criminals determined to undermine Otumfuo’s mediation efforts should be picked up and held to account,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, reconciliation, and unity in the Kusaug Traditional Area, the KPC called on traditional authorities, religious leaders, the media, and citizens to support Otumfuo’s mediation recommendations and government efforts to restore lasting peace and bring development to Bawku.
The Bawku conflict has seen various efforts to resolve it, with the Asantehene’s mediation being a significant step toward lasting peace.
