Poor conditions and heavy workload driving teachers out from the teaching service – Dr. Barnabas Addai Amanfo

Dr. Barnabas Addai Amanfo, a lecturer at Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), has identified poor conditions of service and excessive workload as the main reasons Ghanaian teachers continue to leave the profession.
Dr. Amanfo, speaking on Kessben FM with Wofa Kofi Appiah, said many teachers are overworked yet undercompensated, creating frustration and low morale across the education sector. He explained that beyond teaching, educators are burdened with administrative duties, large class sizes, and limited resources, all of which negatively affect their productivity and well-being.
He noted that the situation has contributed significantly to teacher attrition, with many professionals either exiting the service entirely or seeking better opportunities abroad. Dr. Amanfo warned that if these challenges are not urgently addressed, Ghana risks worsening teacher shortages and declining educational outcomes.
The AAMUSTED lecturer called on policymakers to prioritize improved conditions of service, fair remuneration, and manageable workloads for teachers.
