Due to poor conditions of service, many university lecturers leave Ghana for abroad to teach in secondary schools – Dr Abraham Gyamfi

Dr. Abraham Gyamfi has raised concerns about the growing exodus of university lecturers from Ghana, attributing the trend to poor conditions of service in the country’s tertiary education sector.

Speaking on Kessben Maakye with Wofa Kofi Appiah, Dr. Gyamfi revealed that many highly qualified lecturers are leaving Ghana to teach in secondary schools abroad.

According to him, the situation reflects deep-rooted challenges within Ghana’s academic system, where inadequate remuneration, limited research support, and poor working conditions continue to frustrate university staff. He noted that it is alarming for PhD holders and seasoned academics to seek opportunities in foreign secondary schools simply to access better pay and more stable working environments.

Dr. Gyamfi warned that the continuous loss of experienced lecturers poses a serious threat to the quality of higher education in Ghana. He explained that universities are struggling to retain talent, which ultimately affects research output, mentorship, and the training of future professionals.

He called on the government and relevant stakeholders to urgently improve the conditions of service for university lecturers, stressing that investing in academia is crucial for national development.
