It’s unfactual to say Galamsey has gone up under President Mahama – Akuoko Frimpong
Akuoko Frimpong, former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere Central, has dismissed claims that illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as Galamsey, increased under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration. Speaking on Kessben FM, Frimpong described such assertions as “unfactual” and misleading.
According to him, the narrative that galamsey worsened under President Mahama does not align with available records and actions taken during that period. Frimpong argued that the Mahama administration introduced structured interventions aimed at regulating small-scale mining rather than allowing it to spiral out of control. He pointed to efforts to formalize the sector, strengthen monitoring, and involve local authorities in managing mining activities.
He stressed that galamsey is a long-standing national challenge that cuts across different governments and cannot be fairly attributed to a single administration. He cautioned against the politicization of the issue, noting that such an approach distracts from finding sustainable solutions to protect Ghana’s water bodies and environment.
Speaking on Kessben FM, the former DCE called for a more balanced and fact-based discussion on illegal mining. He urged policymakers to focus on enforcement, alternative livelihoods, and community engagement rather than trading blame.
