118 Former NPP Parliamentary Candidates Throw Weight Behind Dr. Bawumia’s Presidential Bid

One hundred and eighteen former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates have officially endorsed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their preferred candidate for the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026. Speaking at a press conference in Accra, former Deputy Energy Minister, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, announced the endorsement, citing Dr. Bawumia’s visionary leadership, innovative ideas, and strong track record of policy initiatives as key reasons for their support.

“Dr. Bawumia’s experience as Vice President, coupled with his policy initiatives and commitment to Ghana’s development, demonstrates his competence and integrity,” Mr. Mercer stated. He noted that the endorsement was a testament to Dr. Bawumia’s exceptional leadership skills, technical expertise in economics and finance, and his dedication to Ghana’s digital transformation and good governance.

The former parliamentary candidates, who contested in the 2024 elections, have engaged with stakeholders, including polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, and constituency executives, and are convinced that Dr. Bawumia is best placed to lead the party to victory in the 2028 general elections.

“We have listened to the youth, market women, farmers, fisherfolk, business men and women, opinion leaders, religious leaders, traditional authorities, and the broader Ghanaian public,” Mr. Mercer said, adding that there is a broad and overwhelming consensus that Dr. Bawumia is the ideal candidate to lead the party.

According to Mr. Mercer, the decision to support Dr. Bawumia’s candidature was not motivated by parochial or self-interest, but rather a deep sense of duty to the party and the future direction of Ghana. “This decision was taken after sober reflection and based on a deep sense of duty to our great party and the future direction of our dear nation, Ghana,” he emphasized.

The endorsement comes as Dr. Bawumia is considered one of the frontrunners for the NPP’s presidential ticket, with many party delegates expected to cast their votes in his favor. The NPP’s presidential primaries are scheduled to take place on January 31, 2026, and the party is expected to announce its flagbearer candidate in the coming weeks.

Dr. Bawumia’s vision for Ghana includes digitalization, economic transformation, infrastructure development, human capital development, and agricultural modernization. The former parliamentary candidates have pledged to work closely with him to ensure a resounding victory for the NPP in 2028.
