Canada, Ghana Deepen Trade Ties as High Commissioner Meets Trade Minister

The Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Myriam Montrat, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, underscoring renewed efforts to strengthen trade and investment relations between Ghana and Canada.

The meeting, held in Accra on Friday, December 19, 2025, focused on opportunities for trade diversification, particularly the expansion of market access for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and the agribusiness sector. Discussions also touched on the promotion of responsible and sustainable business practices, strengthening bilateral trade partnerships, and the role of trade in supporting development efforts.

H.E. Montrat noted that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents significant opportunities that both countries can leverage to boost intra-African and global trade.

She called on the Ministry to help address challenges relating to trade and investment, especially within the regulatory environment, to attract more Canadian businesses.

The High Commissioner further revealed that Air Canada has expressed interest in exploring opportunities to operate in Ghana, citing the importance of improved connectivity in promoting trade, tourism, and stronger people-to-people relations.

In her response, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare welcomed the High Commissioner and expressed appreciation for Canada’s continued interest in Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.

She emphasized that under the government’s agribusiness policy, there is a deliberate focus on adding value to raw materials to drive industrial growth and job creation.

The Minister also disclosed that litigation-free lands have been acquired and made available to investors interested in contract commercial farming to support local industries and strengthen value chains.

She added that improved connectivity remains critical to enhancing trade, investment, and bilateral relations, reaffirming the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investors.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Ghana and Canada to deepen economic cooperation and explore new frontiers for sustainable trade and development.
