Social media is not a failure of technology but a failure of ethics – George Akom, educationist, reacts to interdicted police officers

Educationist George Akom has described the growing misuse of social media as a failure of ethics rather than a failure of technology. Reacting to the recent interdiction of some police officers over an inappropriate social media post, he shared his views during a discussion on Kessben FM.

According to Mr. Akom, social media platforms are powerful tools designed to inform, educate, and connect people across the world. However, the problem arises when users abandon ethical standards and professional responsibility in their online conduct.

He stressed that technology itself is neutral; it is the values and discipline of users that determine whether it is used positively or negatively.

Commenting on the interdicted police officers, Mr. Akom noted that public officials, especially those in uniform, are expected to uphold higher moral and professional standards, both offline and online. He explained that irresponsible posts can damage public trust and undermine the integrity of institutions.

Mr. Akom therefore called for stronger ethical education, digital responsibility, and continuous training for professionals on the proper use of social media.
