Because greed ‘Kooko’ taro hardly grows in Ghana now – Elder Agyenim Kwaku Boateng

Elder Agyenim Kwaku Boateng, a lecturer at the Presbyterian University, has raised concerns about the impact of greed on Ghana’s environment and agriculture.

Speaking on Kessben FM with KOD, he remarked that because of greed (Kooko), taro hardly grows in Ghana anymore.” He used taro as a symbol of how human actions are disrupting natural systems.

According to Elder Boateng, unchecked greed has pushed people to build houses and structures in waterlogged areas and along waterways.

These areas, which once supported crops like taro, are now being converted into residential and commercial spaces. As a result, natural water flow is blocked, soils are degraded, and farmlands are lost.

He warned that building on waterways affects agriculture increases the risk of flooding and environmental damage.
