Most women turn to smoking and drinking due to relationship issues and peer influence – Ghana Narcotics Board

The Ghana Narcotics Control Board has raised concerns about the growing trend of smoking and alcohol consumption among women, attributing the issue largely to relationship challenges and peer influence.

Some members of the board in the Ashanti region, in an interview on Kessben TV’s Mmaa Nkabi programme with Akua Yeboah noted that many women turn to smoking and drinking as coping mechanisms when faced with emotional stress stemming from failed relationships, marital problems, heartbreak, and domestic pressures. In such vulnerable moments, peer groups often play a significant role by normalizing or encouraging substance use as a way to “relax” or “forget problems,” which can gradually lead to dependency.

The Narcotics Board noted that while substance abuse has traditionally been associated more with men, the gap is narrowing, especially in urban communities. This trend, officials warned, poses serious health, social, and psychological risks to women and families if not addressed early.

The Board used the platform to call for stronger family support systems, counseling services, and public education, particularly targeted at young women. It also encouraged women facing emotional or relationship difficulties to seek professional help and positive support networks rather than turning to harmful substances.
