Ghana’s lithium discovery: The lands minister should not go and sit and negotiate for Ghana, we should find experts to that – Charles Owusu Juanah ESQ

Speaking on Kessben FM’s morning show with KOD, legal practitioner Charles Owusu Juanah, ESQ, urged the government to exercise caution in how negotiations surrounding Ghana’s lithium resources are handled.

According to Mr. Juanah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources should not personally sit at the negotiating table on behalf of Ghana.

He argued that lithium is a highly technical and globally competitive resource tied to electric vehicles, renewable energy, and advanced technology, and therefore requires specialized expertise. In his view, Ghana must engage experienced negotiators, international mining experts, contract lawyers, and economists who fully understand the global lithium market.

Mr. Juanah stressed that Ghana has, in the past, suffered from poorly negotiated mineral agreements that failed to maximize national benefits.

He warned that repeating such mistakes with lithium could cost the country billions in lost revenue and opportunities for industrial growth. Instead, he called for transparent, expert-driven negotiations that prioritize value addition, local participation, environmental protection, and long-term economic gains.
