Transport Minister signals imminent passage of okada legalisation bill

The Minister for Transportation, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has hinted that the long-awaited bill seeking to legalise commercial motorbikes, commonly known as Okada, would be passed in the coming days.

Mr Nikpe said the Ministry has concluded the necessary consultations and is confident that Parliament will soon give the green light to the legislation, which seeks to regulate the operation of commercial motorbikes across the country.

“I am working on the Okada bill. When it is passed within the days to come, I will have the joy to be on air with you,” he said on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, December 11.

The new framework is expected to introduce structured guidelines for registration, training, and safety compliance, ensuring that riders operate within a formalised system.

Mr Nikpe formally submitted the bill to Parliament on Wednesday.

The initiative is part of the governing NDC government’s promise to legalise the use of motorbikes for commercial purposes, an activity already in practice across the country.

The NDC government believes the venture can help reduce unemployment among young Ghanaians, particularly male youth. Motorbikes are already widely used in urban areas for delivery services and transporting commuters during peak traffic hours, offering a swift alternative to traditional vehicles.
