Food Market To Be Soon Set Up In Atiwa West As One -Stop Foodstuffs Hub -DCE Hints

The District Chief Executive for Atiwa west in the eastern region has disclosed that the assembly through the government under President John Dramani Mahama will establish a Food Market in the Atiwa west district where varieties of food crops grown by the gallant farmers in the district will be sold only. Hon Johnson Anom Amo broke this hint on Friday 5th December, 2025 at Akyem Tumfa when delivering his speech as this year’s 41st National Farmers Day celebration under the theme : Feed Ghana , eat Ghana , secure the future . He noted in his speech that ten ( 10) farming communities in the Atiwa west district including Akyem Tumfa were selected by the committee set up by the district agriculture directorate but Tumfa community got the nod due to the fact that the farmers grow a larger food crops to supply the district. The Atiwa west DCE indicated agriculture is the backbone of the Ghanaian economy and according to the Ghana Living Standards Survey 52% of households in Ghana own or operate a farm and farming is predominantly done in our rural communities with about 83% of our rural households engage in it and its a clear indication that an increase in the supply of inputs to the agriculture sector will have a positive correlation in family incomes and economic growth. Hon Johnson Amo stressed that majority of the population living in the Atiwa west district are into farming venture and have contributed to the food supply to the benefit of everyone living in the district and they must be highly recommended for that as gallant farmers. He noted that the government under the able leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has rolled out policies and programmes that will lead to the total transformation of the agriculture sector, notable among these policies the Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda ( AETA) as well as the Feed Ghana programmes which focus on modernising agriculture, ensuring food security and boosting agri – business . The Atiwa west DCE further disclosed that the primary focus of the Feed Ghana programme is to enhance local agriculture production, reduce food imports and create jobs and this will be achieved through improved seeds and practices as well as introduction of programs to support small holder farmers with better access to credit insurance and subsidised inputs . Other policies the government is pursuing according to Hon Johnson Anom Amo involved promoting value addition through agro processing, modernising agriculture and recognising the youth and women in the agriculture sector. The Atiwa west DCE stressed that the government of President John Dramani Mahama barely a year in old in office has made significant achievements in the agriculture sector and these achievements are driven by the Government’s Feed Ghana programme and strong focus on modernisation, infrastructure and private sector participation and some of these includes : Reduction in food inflation, Expanded irrigation infrastructure, Mechanisation and technology, Cooperative development , Agro – industrial development, amongst others. He disclosed that the ” NKOKO NKITINKITI” program intervention is backed by strong fiscal commitment including a GH 1.5 billion allocation in 2025 to drive agricultural modernisation, expand access to inputs and strengthen value chain systems across the country. The DCE emphasised that in order for farmers in Atiwa west district benefit from the above mentioned interventions the Agriculture department conducted 2, 849 home and farm visits to 14, 627 farmers . A total of 107 Cooperatives with membership of 3, 842 farmers comprising 2, 364 male and 1, 478 females covering 24 communities in the district have been registered and encouraged farmers and the youth who are yet to register to visit the Agriculture department and get themselves registered. Hon Johnson Anom Amo disclosed further that the government through the minerals commission of Ghana supplied 31, 500 oil palm seedlings to the district which was distributed to 188 farmers comprising 129 males and 59 females to establish 520 acres of plantation . Hon Johnson Anom Amo encouraged the farmers in the Atiwa west district to continue doing their best to grow more food crops to feed the good people in the district and also encouraged the youth to take keen interest in farming . He commended Xtra Gold Company Limited , ATK Mining Company, Atiwa Rural Bank , DK Mining Company, Ready Oil , Budu Mining Company, David & Mike Mining , Adonteng Rural Bank , Goil Company Limited and Noble Mining Company for their contributions towards a very successful farmers day celebration in the district. The member of parliament for Atiwa west Hon Lauret Korkor Asante commended farmers in the Atiwa west for their immense contribution towards food crops growing to feed the good people in the district and calls for government support to help address their challenges. Akyem Tumfa chief , Barima Osei Adom II who chaired the ceremony also expressed joy for hosting this year’s farmers day ceremony , commended the farmers in the Atiwa west district for working so hard to feed the entire population in the district and called on the government to rehabilitate and fix some of the deplorable condition of the roads in the district so that farmers who ply the road with their food crops will not face difficulties in transporting their produce. Akyem Muoso chief Osaberima Dr Owusu Beyeeman who also commended the gallant farmers in the district called on the youth to avoid engaging into illegal mining activities. In all a total of 19 individual farmers were awarded and rewarded by the district assembly through their hard work . The 2nd runner up award went to 46 years old Akpelasi Aushetu from Akyem Kwabeng who received a brand new motor bike with other farming inputs and a citation. The 1st runner up went to 63 years old Grace Oforiwaa from Akyem Abomoso also was presented with a brand new motor bike, varieties of farming inputs and a citation. The overall best farmer in Atiwa west district for 2025 went to 44 years old Muntari Razak from Akyem Akropong and he received a brand new Motor King popularly known as Aboboyaa , varieties of farming inputs and a citation which was presented by the DCE Hon Johnson Anom Amo assisted by both Akyem Tumfa chief and Muoso chief.
