Kumasi Phone Accessories sellers cry over foreigners taking over retail business

Phone accessories dealers in Kumasi have raised serious concerns over what they describe as the growing dominance of foreign nationals in Ghana’s retail market.
Speaking on Kessben FM, several traders lamented that their businesses are collapsing as foreigners, particularly in major commercial hubs, continue to take over retail spaces traditionally reserved for local traders.
According to the aggrieved sellers, foreign retailers are not only operating in sectors restricted to Ghanaians but are also selling their products at prices local traders cannot match.
They explained that these foreign businesses often have greater access to capital and bulk import discounts, allowing them to sell items at significantly lower prices, thereby driving Ghanaian traders out of the market.
The traders also expressed frustration over what they see as weak enforcement of Ghana’s retail laws. Despite repeated complaints to authorities, they claim little has been done to address the issue, leaving local businesses vulnerable and struggling to survive.
They appealed to government agencies, municipal authorities, and trade regulators to intervene urgently. Failure to act, they warned, could lead to the collapse of many Ghanaian-owned businesses and further disempower local traders who depend on the retail sector for their livelihood.
