IDEG Boss Calls For Major NDPC Reforms

The Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance, Dr. Emmanuel Akwettey, is calling for a serious transformation of the National Development Planning Commission after 30 years of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

Speaking at graphic business/standbic bank breakfast meeting, Dr. Akwettey said the NDPC must be reformed to match international best practices seen in countries such as South Korea, India and China.
According to him, leadership at the Commission should be selected through strong, credible processes similar to those used in countries that have excelled in development planning.
Dr. Akwettey also argued that political parties must be strengthened to function effectively as development agents. He proposed the creation of a multi-party democracy commission that would assess party structures and support them with government-backed funding.
He warned that party manifestos lose meaning if they are not aligned with the Directive Principles of State Policy, saying political parties are agents of the state and must reflect the national vision to unite and transform the country.
With Ghana now 33 years into the Fourth Republic, Dr. Akwettey questioned whether the nation can achieve meaningful transformation without strengthening the NDPC, political parties, and the institutions that support them.
He urged all stakeholders, including financial institutions, to examine these critical issues.
