GoldBod Act: Clarifying Misconceptions on Galamsey Legalization, As Dr Steve Manteaw replies Prof Adei

Dr. Emmanuel Steve Asare Manteaw, a policy analyst and natural resource governance advocate, has responded to Prof Stephen Adei’s claims that the president has legalized galamsey by establishing the GoldBod. In a scathing critique, Dr. Manteaw says Prof Adei’s comments betray his ignorance of the GoldBod Act’s rationale and mandate.

Dr. Manteaw notes that Prof Adei’s commentary suggests he hasn’t read the GoldBod Act, making him oblivious to measures outlined in the Act to ensure illegally mined gold doesn’t enter the supply chain. The GoldBod is currently considering proposals for a gold traceability framework, which will document the chain of custody from mine head to market.

“How can an Act, which requires the establishment of a gold traceability system, be intended to legalize galamsey?” Dr. Manteaw asks. He adds that it’s equally baffling to describe an entity aligned with OECD guidelines on Responsible Mineral Sourcing and FATF requirements on Customer Due Diligence as intended to legalize galamsey.

“Such pedestrian comments from respectable academics are regrettable, to say the least,” Dr. Manteaw concludes, urging Prof Adei to stop making mischievous claims.

The GoldBod Act aims to regulate Ghana’s gold industry, ensuring transparency and accountability in the sector.
