Ghana Launches Gun Amnesty Programme to Tackle Illicit Firearms

The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has announced a Gun Amnesty Programme aimed at reducing the proliferation of illicit firearms in the country.

The programme, which will run from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026, allows individuals who possess unregistered or illicit firearms to surrender them without fear of prosecution or arrest.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Muntaka emphasized that the amnesty was a “life-saving initiative” and urged individuals to take advantage of the opportunity to surrender their illicit firearms.

“Every illicit firearm in circulation is a silent threat. It may lie hidden in a cupboard, under a bed, or buried in the bush, but at any moment, it can destroy lives and families forever,” he said.

The programme is accompanied by additional measures, including a temporary ban on firearm importation, sale, and registration, as well as enhanced border security to prevent arms trafficking.

Minister Muntaka called on traditional leaders, religious organizations, and community associations to support the initiative and encourage their communities to surrender illicit firearms.

“Let us build a culture of dialogue, not violence—of safety, not fear,” he said.

The Gun Amnesty Programme is part of the government’s efforts to reduce gun violence and promote peace and security in the country.
