Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative will boost food security and livelihoods – President Mahama

The “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” initiative, a statewide program designed to revitalize Ghana’s chicken sector and change home poultry production, has been formally inaugurated by President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at the launch in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 12, the president characterized the program as a daring and useful move toward empowering communities and attaining food self-sufficiency.

The project, he claimed, was “more than just a government intervention,” describing it as “a national movement, a daring step towards restoring food self-sufficiency, boosting home resilience, and fostering.

A major component of the larger Feed Ghana Programme, a national strategy aimed at promoting agricultural transformation, food sovereignty, and shared prosperity, the “Nkoko Nkitinkiti” program is part of the Poultry Industry Revitalization Programme.

Ghana’s once-thriving chicken industry is declining, according to President Mahama, who cited enduring issues such high feed costs, restricted access to superior breeds, insufficient processing capacity, and a significant reliance on imports.

“In 2023 alone, Ghana spent over $350 million importing poultry products. That is a drain on our foreign exchange and a missed opportunity for our farmers and entrepreneurs. We must, and we will, reverse this trend.”
