NAIMOS Cracks Down on Fake Anti-Galamsey Task Force in Aowin

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested 10 armed men impersonating members of the Anti-Galamsey Task Force in the Nyankamam-Armori forest of Aowin Municipality, Western North Region.
The suspects, who claimed links with the Aowin Paramount Chief, were extorting money from illegal miners and encouraging galamsey activities. They were arrested with weapons and traditional talismans.
NAIMOS’ operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, linked to environmental degradation, deforestation, and water pollution in Ghana. The Aowin Municipality has faced growing galamsey activity despite previous enforcement efforts.
The arrested men are not part of any legitimate task force, and their activities could undermine government initiatives to curb illegal mining. NAIMOS urges local communities and miners to report suspicious individuals posing as law enforcement or task force personnel.
