I’ve been sealing all the holes they used to steal, that’s why they hate & want to eliminate me – Alhaji Sumaila Boakye

Alhaji Sumaila Boakye, Chairman of the GPRTU in the Ashanti Region, has voiced out frustration over what he describes as a concerted effort by some members of his union’s executive to remove him from office.

Speaking on Kessben FM with Wofa Kofi Appiah, the regional chairman said the push to oust him stems from his determination to plug financial leakages in the union’s operations.

“Since I assumed office, I have been sealing all the holes they used to steal monies,” He said, adding that “they hate and want to kick me out” because his reforms threaten entrenched interests. According to him, the resistance is not ideological but personal: those benefiting from the old system feel vulnerable under his cleanup drive.

Boakye has instituted a number of reforms in the region’s transport union: he has warned that no commercial vehicle will be allowed to operate without a valid union sticker, and has ramped up oversight of transport stations to enforce compliance.

However, his bold approach has triggered internal conflict. A group of branch executives have sought to institute an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to take over the regional secretariat’s affairs, citing alleged impropriety and irregularities in Boakye’s leadership. The union’s legal processes are already in motion: a court injunction has halted the planned regional elections following a petition challenging Boakye’s eligibility for another term.

The situation now presents a crossroads for the GPRTU in Ashanti: on one hand, there is a push for transparent governance and accountability; on the other, entrenched interests are pushing back through institutional mechanisms.
