African Women Leaders Network Ghana Mourns Passing of Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Ghana Chapter has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, a trailblazing leader who left an indelible mark on Ghana’s social and political landscape. Her Excellency passed away on October 23, 2025, at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy of transformative initiatives that empowered women and children across the country ¹.
A Visionary Leader and Advocate for Women’s Empowerment
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a champion of women’s rights and empowerment, dedicating her life to promoting education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for women, particularly in rural communities. Through the 31st December Women’s Movement, she mobilized and empowered women across Ghana, providing them with the tools to generate income, participate in community leadership, and engage in national decision-making.
A Trailblazer in Politics
Beyond her role as First Lady, Nana Konadu was a pioneering politician who broke down barriers for women in politics. She became the first woman in Ghana to establish and lead a political party, the National Democratic Party (NDP), and made history as the first woman to run for President of Ghana. Her boldness and determination to participate actively in the country’s democratic process reflected her lifelong belief in women’s equal right to leadership and participation in governance.
