The Youth of Ghana used Social Media to drive out NPP in the 2024 elections – Former Subin MP & aspiring General Secretary of the NPP, Eugene Boakye Antwi

Former Subin MP and aspiring General Secretary of the NPP Eugene Boakye Antwi has outlined a key reason why the NPP suffered a major setback in the 2024 general elections, arguing that digital channels helped catalyze the change in electoral fortunes.
Boakye Antwi speaking on Kessben FM with KOD emphasized that the youth of Ghana were not engaged in passive voter roles but were active participants: they used social media to express dissatisfaction, organise sentiment, and influence peer networks. Their mobilizing force, he says, contributed to the party being “driven out” by the mood of younger voters.
He further states that the NPP’s leadership failed to recognize or respond to this emerging dynamic. The implications, according to him, are two-fold: first, that any future political strategy must prioritize digital engagement with young electorates; and second, that traditional campaigning and party structures alone will no longer suffice.
The former MP adds context by reminding his party that holding power is not enough, staying connected to evolving voter attitudes, especially among the youth who dominate social media presence, is critical. He argues that the NPP’s defeat was in part self-inflicted by neglecting this new terrain of political engagement.
While he did not detail the exact social media campaigns or platforms involved, his assessment aligns with broader research that young Ghanaian voters increasingly use platforms like Whatsapp, Twitter/X and Facebook for political discourse, and that such platforms have become important in mobilising sections of the electorate.
