Meet Okatakyie: The Kumasi Liveband star winning Hearts from funerals to parties
Kumasi’s vibrant music scene has birthed many talents over the years, but one name that continues to stand out in the world of liveband music is Okatakyie. Known for his energetic performances and soulful renditions, Okatakyie has become a household name across the Ashanti Region, performing everywhere from funerals and weddings to pubs and private events.
In an exclusive interview with Fante Quoo on Kessben FM, Okatakyie shared his inspiring journey, revealing that the path to musical success wasn’t always smooth. According to him, his passion for liveband music was met with strong resistance from his family, especially his mother.
“When I started playing with bands, my mother wasn’t in support at all. She didn’t think it was a serious career path. She wanted me to do something more ‘secure’,” he recounted.
Despite the initial objections, Okatakyie stayed committed to his dream, performing at small gigs, honing his skills, and slowly building a reputation. Over time, his consistency and the joy his music brought to people began to change his mother’s perspective.
“She later saw how people appreciated what I do, and how far it was taking me. Eventually, she accepted it and even started supporting me. That meant everything to me,” he added.
Okatakyie’s journey reflects the story of many Ghanaian creatives who often face societal pressure to abandon artistic careers. Yet, through resilience and passion, he has not only proven doubters wrong but also carved a niche for himself as one of Kumasi’s most sought-after live performers.
Whether it’s setting the tone at a traditional funeral, adding life to a wedding reception, or entertaining revellers at local pubs, Okatakyie’s performances are known to move audiences emotionally and get them dancing.
