Three Years On: Appiatse Explosion Victims Still Await Full Recovery

It has been three years since the devastating Appiatse explosion shook the mining community near Bogoso, yet survivors say the road to full recovery remains painfully slow.

Speaking on The Digest with Kessben Plus, Vincent Asamoah, Chairman of the Roads and Housing Committee, noted that the community at Brekuso has been partially rebuilt. While half of the structures have been restored, the remainder still awaits government action. He emphasized that although Brekuso’s recovery is important, the tragedy at Appiatse requires urgent national attention and must not be overlooked.

The disaster occurred on 20 January 2022, when a truck carrying mining explosives collided with a motorcycle, triggering a massive blast that levelled much of the community. While the government has mobilized resources for rebuilding, residents argue that restoring homes is only part of the solution.

Asamoah highlighted that discussions are ongoing regarding how best to help victims regain livelihoods. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach—one that addresses both damaged infrastructure and the ongoing socio-economic fallout.

The Appiatse explosion remains one of Ghana’s most tragic mining accidents. While physical reconstruction is visible, many survivors feel that critical issues—such as compensation, livelihood restoration, and regulatory oversight—remain unresolved. True recovery, they say, will only be achieved when survivors not only have new homes but also meaningful pathways to rebuild their lives.
