Many young people go fishing without any safety precautions – Yaa Oforiwaa, the National Coordinator for Volta Lake Transport Safety

Yaa Oforiwaa, the National Coordinator for Volta Lake Transport Safety, stated in an interview on Kessben FM with Kojo Preko Dankwa that there is minimal safety on the lake.

She explained that most fishermen do not wear life jackets or any form of protective gear while fishing, leaving them vulnerable if their boats capsize. She also noted that many young people go fishing without any safety precautions.

Ms. Oforiwaa clarified that she does not entirely blame the communities, as many were displaced by the creation of the Akosombo Dam, which led to the lake’s formation and their current reliance on it.

To improve safety, her organization conducts checks on boat loads and passenger numbers. Sometimes, they place a lifeguard on board to ensure everyone wears a life jacket. Ms. Oforiwaa emphasized that her organization is prepared to expand its efforts, possessing the necessary human resources and logistical capacity.

She stated that all they require is government support and encouragement to assist the people effectively. She believes that formalizing and supporting their organization will save lives and significantly reduce the number of accidents on the lake. They are ready to tackle this safety issue head-on, leveraging their expertise in safety records.
