Dr. Tekper Calls Grow for Accountability and Reform After Appiatse Tragedy

Three years after the devastating Appiatse explosion, questions still linger about the use of relief funds, government support, and accountability for the victims. Policy analyst Dr. Peter Terkper is calling for urgent policy and legal reforms to ensure transparency and preparedness for future disasters.
Speaking on The Digest on Kessben Plus, Dr. Terkper said the government must strengthen systems that promote accountability and ensure proper documentation of donations and government contributions.
He raised concerns about who is responsible for tracking the funds and support provided in the aftermath of the explosion, noting that a committee was set up but little is known about its progress or findings.
Dr. Terkper also demanded clarity on the role of the mining companies involved in the tragedy, asking what investigations were conducted and what conclusions were reached. He warned that without clear answers, similar incidents could easily be repeated.
He further highlighted that successive governments often neglect unfinished responsibilities, leaving affected communities without lasting solutions. “This calls for policy reforms and legal changes so that when something happens, we immediately know where the root is and how to tackle it,” he said.
The Appiatse explosion, which claimed several lives and displaced many residents, remains a painful memory. As the nation reflects on the tragedy, Dr. Terkper’s call for accountability serves as a reminder that without concrete reforms, lessons from Appiatse risk being forgotten.
