GWL Seeks Collaboration with Corporate Ghana and Development Partners to Address Siltation Challenge

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Adam Mutawakilu, addressed the press to highlight the severe impact of siltation on the company’s operations. “Ghana’s raw-water sources are silting up faster than our plants were built to handle,” he warned. Mutawakilu emphasized that the consequences of inaction would be dire, with costs cascading across the economy and impacting various industries, including manufacturing, hospitality, and healthcare ¹.
The Alarming Reality
GWL’s data reveals that several major intakes experience spikes in turbidity levels after heavy rains, forcing the company to undertake emergency dredging and other costly measures to maintain water supply. The Owabi plant, for instance, required GHS 64 million for dredging last year, while Mampong needed GHS 13.8 million. These interventions not only strain the company’s resources but also impact water supply to communities.
A 24-Month Catchment Recovery Plan
To address the issue, GWL proposes a joint 24-month Catchment Recovery Plan focused on eight priority river bodies feeding its plants. The plan includes:
Riverbank Stabilization: to prevent further erosion and sedimentation
Re-vegetation: to restore natural habitats and reduce runoff
Targeted Dredging: to remove sediment and restore water flow
Community Engagement: to educate and involve local communities in protecting riparian buffers
A Call to Action
GWL is urging Corporate Ghana and development partners to join forces in implementing the Catchment Recovery Plan. The company seeks co-funding, closer collaboration with stakeholders, and in-kind support to make the project a success. By working together, GWL aims to:
Stabilize Water Production: restore abstraction capacity and reduce treatment challenges
Reduce Costs: lower specific energy consumption and unit costs
– *Ensure Reliable Supply*: provide consistent water supply to households, schools, and businesses
Government Interventions Commended
GWL commended the Government of Ghana for its efforts to combat illegal mining and protect the environment. The company acknowledged the significant steps taken by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources to address the issue.
A Brighter Future
With partnership and collective action, GWL is confident that it can recover lost capacity, reduce treatment losses, and stabilize water supply. The company is committed to reporting progress transparently, ensuring that every partner can see the impact of their contribution. Together, Ghana can keep its taps running and ensure a brighter future for its citizens.
