Hon. Ekow Vincent Asafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo constituency, has predicted that social media will play a decisive 40-50% role in Ghana’s 2028 general elections, calling on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to urgently revamp its digital strategy.

Speaking at the NPP Luton Chapter meeting, the seasoned parliamentarian emphasized the critical need for the party to learn from the 2024 electoral defeat and begin immediate preparations for the next election cycle.

Early Preparation Key to Success:

“As a serious political party as New Patriotic Party, we must know that elections are process and not an event that the party must wait till 2028 before winning ,” Asafuah stated. “What we need to do from now is to start the needful process ahead of 2028 election.”

The MP’s remarks highlight a shift in political thinking, emphasizing continuous engagement over last-minute campaigning.

NPP’s Social Media Challenges:

Hon.Asafuah was candid about the party’s digital shortcomings, noting the difficulties faced by NPP members in defending the party’s achievements online.

“It is very difficult in the NPP for the youth and members to defend the good work of the party on the various social media platforms worldwide,” he observed.

Learning from NDC’s Digital Success:

The Old Tafo MP attributed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) 2024 victory partly to their superior social media strategy.

“NDC won social media in 2024 general elections because its members used social media platforms to campaign which played the major role in winning the elections, while NPP failed to promote the party activities on social media platforms,” He explained.

Call for Youth Engagement:

The parliamentarian issued a direct appeal to young NPP members to embrace digital platforms as essential tools for political engagement.

“I urge the young people to take social media as one of the strategic means for us to be able to bounce back as a party,” he said.

High Stakes for 2028:

Emphasizing the critical importance of digital engagement, Hon. Asafuah warned of the consequences of continued social media neglect.

“Social media will play 40-50% in the 2028 elections, if NPP loses there, they have a problem as well,” he stated emphatically.

The MP’s projections reflect the growing influence of digital platforms in modern political campaigns, where voter engagement, narrative control, and grassroots mobilization increasingly occur online.

As Ghana approaches the 2028 election cycle, Asafuah’s call for immediate action suggests that political parties can no longer afford to treat social media as an afterthought in their campaign strategies.
