President Mahama Champions $3 Trillion African-Caribbean Economic Alliance

President John Dramani Mahama has called for transformative economic collaboration between African and Caribbean businesses, emphasizing the extraordinary potential of a unified market representing 1.3 billion people with a combined GDP exceeding $3 trillion.

Speaking during high-level diplomatic discussions with Caribbean leadership at the Presidency today October 17, 2025, President Mahama outlined his vision for unprecedented cross-regional economic integration.

“We must find ways and means of bringing the two business communities together to create further investments,” President Mahama declared, highlighting the urgent need for strategic partnerships between the two regions.

The President positioned Ghana’s unique role as headquarters of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a catalyst for this ambitious economic alliance. “Ghana happens to be the headquarters of the Afghan continental free trade area, and that was a very historic trade agreement that was signed, and so far, more than 50 countries have ratified it, he explained.

President Mahama emphasized how the AfCFTA creates unprecedented opportunities for African-Caribbean business collaboration. “It allows us to export duty free and tariff free into each other’s markets. And I believe it becomes an opportunity for African and Caribbean businesses to invest together, to take advantage of a 1.3 billion population market, and with a GDP of more than 3 trillion,” he stated.

The President’s vision extends beyond mere trade agreements to encompass comprehensive economic partnership. The initiative builds on existing frameworks including MOUs on trade, culture, and education, as well as visa waiver agreements designed to facilitate business travel and investment flows.

This economic collaboration represents a significant shift toward South-South cooperation, with President Mahama positioning the partnership as a model for developing nations to leverage their combined economic strength on the global stage.

The President’s call comes at a crucial time when both African and Caribbean economies are seeking to diversify their trade relationships and reduce dependence on traditional Western markets.

With over 50 countries already ratifying the AfCFTA, President Mahama’s vision represents a concrete pathway for realizing the economic potential of African-Caribbean collaboration. The initiative promises to create new opportunities for trade, investment, and mutual economic growth across both regions.

The announcement signals Ghana’s proactive leadership in fostering international economic partnerships and establishing itself as a key facilitator in continental and global trade networks.
