Ghana-Grenada Sign MOU to Recruit Ghanaian Nurses for Caribbean Nation’s Health Sector

The Governments of the Republic of Ghana and the State of Grenada have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate the recruitment of Ghanaian nurses and allied health professionals to serve in Grenada’s health sector.
The agreement, signed by the Ghana’s Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Grenadian Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Joseph Andall during the Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Thomas Mitchell’s official visit to Ghana, represents a significant milestone in South-South cooperation and healthcare collaboration between the two nations.
Speaking today, Friday October 17, 2025 during the state luncheon at the Presidency in honor of Prime Minister Mitchell, President John Dramani Mahama highlighted the strategic importance of this partnership, emphasizing Ghana’s reputation for healthcare excellence.
“Grenada’s interest in recruiting Ghanaian nurses and allied health professionals presents a valuable opportunity for structured collaboration between our two countries,” President Mahama stated. “Ghanaian health workers have gained international recognition for their professionalism and their compassion.”
The President praised Ghanaian healthcare professionals as valuable ambassadors of the nation’s healthcare system, noting their dedication and global reputation for excellence.
While celebrating the new agreement, President Mahama also addressed one of the key obstacles to deeper Africa-Caribbean cooperation – the lack of direct air connectivity between the regions.
“Creating direct air links between Ghana and the Caribbean is not just a matter of convenience, but a strategic necessity,” the President emphasized during the state function. “Such connectivity would unleash significant opportunities for trade, tourism, culture and education between our people.”
He noted that despite the geographical proximity, travel between the regions remains cumbersome. “Although oceans may separate us, ancestors, struggles for freedom and dignity have united us throughout history,” President Mahama observed, referencing the shared historical bonds between Ghana and Grenada.
The healthcare MoU builds on an expanding framework of cooperation between Ghana and Grenada. The two countries have previously signed agreements on political consultations, trade, culture, education, and a visa waiver arrangement for diplomatic and service passport holders.
“Since establishing diplomatic relations, our cooperation has steadily increased, guided by our shared commitment to democracy, peace and human rights,” President Mahama noted during the welcoming ceremony.
The President expressed confidence that Prime Minister Mitchell’s visit would “inaugurate a new and promising chapter in Ghana-Grenada relations,” emphasizing the importance of building on shared history to foster mutual prosperity.
President Mahama described the Ghana-Grenada relationship as “an excellent model of South-South cooperation,” highlighting the potential for expanded collaboration across multiple sectors including health, education, agriculture, renewable energy, and heritage tourism.
“Let us build on our shared history to foster shared prosperity, founded on trust cooperation and a deep belief in the common destiny of our peoples,” the President declared during his remarks.
The signing of this MoU comes at a time when both nations are actively working to strengthen people-to-people contacts and address shared challenges, including climate change impacts and the need for sustainable development.
This healthcare partnership is expected to benefit both countries – addressing Grenada’s healthcare workforce needs while providing professional opportunities for Ghanaian nurses and allied health professionals to contribute to healthcare delivery in the Caribbean region.
The agreement represents a practical outcome of the high-level diplomatic engagement between the two countries and demonstrates their commitment to translating bilateral discussions into concrete collaborative initiatives that benefit their citizens.
