Galamsey Fight: Cracking the whip must not be one‑sided – Wofa Kofi Appiah

Veteran broadcaster Wofa Kofi Appiah has urged that Ghana’s battle against illegal mining, popularly known as Galamsey, must be pursued with equal rigor across the political divide. He contended that to be credible, the “whip” cannot be cracked on only one side; both NDC and NPP culprits must be held to account.

Wofa Kofi Appiah argued that when anti‑galamsey operations are perceived as partisan or selective, the entire effort loses legitimacy.

If enforcement is only used against one political party’s affiliates or sympathizers, it becomes a tool of political manipulation rather than environmental justice.

Wofa Kofi Appiah warned that such double standards will deepen cynicism, erode public trust, and embolden those who believe they are shielded by party connections.

He said the fight against galamsey cannot be a side show in partisan politics. He emphasized that no one should be above the law, whether a member of the NDC, the NPP, or any other group.

The environmental devastation, polluted water bodies, and destroyed farmlands do not ask about political affiliations. Thus, the enforcement machinery must act impartially, investigating and prosecuting all implicated individuals or groups.
