The reason why the NDC Gov’t is struggling to fight Galamsey is that they politicized it while in opposition – Hon. Francis Manu-Adabor, Former Ahafo Ano South East MP

Hon. Francis Manu-Adabor, former MP for Ahafo Ano South East, has attributed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s struggles in combating illegal mining, commonly referred to as Galamsey, to their own political actions while in opposition.

According to the Member of Parliament, the NDC’s approach to Galamsey during their time in opposition has significantly undermined their ability to tackle the issue effectively now that they are in government.

Speaking on Kessben FM with Wofa Kofi Appiah, Hon. Manu-Adabor argued that while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government took decisive steps to clamp down on illegal mining, the then-opposition NDC often criticized these efforts, labeling them as politically motivated or as an attack on livelihoods.

Illegal mining has long been a deeply entrenched problem in Ghana, with devastating impacts on the environment, particularly on river bodies and forest reserves. Efforts by successive governments to eliminate the practice have often faced resistance due to its socio-economic implications, especially in rural communities where alternative employment opportunities are limited.

Hon. Manu-Adabor’s comments suggest that political inconsistency and opportunism have played a key role in weakening the national resolve to end illegal mining. By allegedly politicizing anti-Galamsey campaigns for electoral advantage, the NDC, he claims, created a public narrative that now hampers their own efforts to enforce the law.
