Trobu MP, Hon. Gloria Owusu Launches BECE Graduate Support Initiative to Benefit 1,062 Students
Story by: Ebenezer Annan

Hon. Gloria Owusu, Member of Parliament for Trobu Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, has officially launched an ambitious BECE Graduate Support Initiative aimed at supporting 1,062 pre-senior high school students in their educational journey.
The initiative, which provides essential school supplies including mattresses, provisions, and school bags, represents a significant expansion from previous years thanks to collaboration with former Second Lady Samira Bawumia.
Speaking at the official launch ceremony on Saturday October 4, 2025, Hon. Owusu explained the motivation behind the program: “Although the previous NPP administration introduced free senior high education in 2017 to help the people of Ghana, especially parents and students, nevertheless, parents sometimes find it difficult to meet the needs to take care of their wards in schools. Therefore, I decided to create a fund to support pre-senior high school students with better grades annually from 6-12 years back at the time I was parliamentary candidate for Trobu constituency.”
The MP emphasized her personal commitment to the initiative, stating that she has “devoted herself to sponsor the students with mattress, provisions, school bags etc. Annually.”
Expanded Partnership Triples Impact:
This year’s ceremony marked a significant milestone for the program. Hon. Owusu highlighted the transformative partnership that made the expanded reach possible.
“This year’s supportive ceremony is different from the previous events because former Second Lady Samira Bawumia collaborated and took the baton upon herself to support over 1,000 students instead of my proposed 300 BECE graduate students,” she said.
“With the support of Samira Bawumia, we are able to support 1,062 students in their senior high school education,” Hon. Owusu added, expressing gratitude for the partnership that more than tripled the program’s reach.
Encouraging Academic Excellence:
The MP used the occasion to motivate other students in the constituency, encouraging them to “learn hard to also get better grades henceforth to have access to their supportive initiatives designed for the BECE graduates.”
The program specifically targets students with strong academic performance, creating an incentive structure that rewards educational excellence while providing practical support for the transition to senior high school.
Political Context and Future Vision:
Hon. Owusu also took the opportunity to highlight her party’s track record on social policies. “Since 1992, no political party had implemented social policies than New Patriotic Party government to benefit Ghanaians from former President John Agyekum Kuffuor to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” she stated.
Looking ahead to the party’s future, the MP “appealed to New Patriotic Party delegates to vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become the flagbearer ahead of the party’s presidential primary on 31st January, 2026.”
The BECE Graduate Support Initiative represents a grassroots approach to complementing Ghana’s Free Senior High School policy, addressing the additional costs that families face despite the elimination of tuition fees. The program’s expansion demonstrates how partnerships between local and national figures can significantly amplify community impact in education.
