Galamsey Fight: I Urge for responsible mining in communities – Hon. Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah, Ahafo Ano South West MP

The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South West, Hon. Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah, has called for a renewed focus on responsible mining practices as part of efforts to address the growing concerns over illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana.

Speaking on Kessben FM with KOD, the MP acknowledged the impact of illegal mining on local communities, especially the destruction of farmlands, pollution of water bodies, and environmental degradation, but emphasized that mining, when done responsibly, can benefit both the local economy and the nation.

“I’m not against mining. But it must be done responsibly. Our communities deserve to benefit from natural resources without suffering the consequences of illegal activities,” Hon. Dapaah stated.

The MP urged government agencies, traditional authorities, and community leaders to work together to promote licensed, regulated mining that adheres to environmental and safety standards. He emphasized that this approach would create jobs, generate revenue, and protect the environment for future generations.

He also called on the youth to avoid illegal mining activities and instead seek opportunities within properly structured mining frameworks or government employment programs.

As a constituency rich in natural resources, Ahafo Ano South West is particularly vulnerable to the dangers of unregulated mining. The MP reiterated his commitment to advocating for stronger enforcement and better community education to curb galamsey operations.
