The next NPP government will fully complete the Agenda 111 programme as envisioned by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged.
The programme, championed by Dr Bawumia, was the largest investment in healthcare in Ghana’s history, and was designed to ensure that every District in Ghana without a hospital receives a quality, state of the art one hundred bed facility, with accommodation for doctors, nurses and other health workers.
The initiative also included the construction of Regional hospitals in the six (6) newly created Regions, rehabilitation of the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region, and the construction of two new Psychiatric Hospitals, one for the middle belt (Kumasi) and the north (Tamale).
Although a large majority of the facilities had reached advanced stages of construction by the end of 2024, the NDC government has since abandoned the largest investment in health in Ghana’s history to the bushes.
Speaking to past and present Constituency Executives and former NPP government officials at the beginning of his 3-day engagement in the Greater Accra region on Wednesday, a troubled Dr Bawumia pledged the commitment of the next NPP government to fully complete the Agenda 111 programme to ensure that every Ghanaian everywhere in the country has access to quality healthcare.
“When we were in government, we introduced policies and programmes designed to improve the lives of every Ghanaian. Some of the major policies was the introduction of the Medical Drone delivery service, a massive expansion and retooling of the National Ambulance Service, and the provision of healthcare infrastructure under Agenda 111, to ensure that we have an enhanced healthcare system in Ghana.
“But sadly, the new government seems to have abandoned this major investment in healthcare. Nine months into their tenure, there is no indication that they are completing them to improve access to healthcare. This is very worrying.
“I promise you: If they don’t complete them, the next NPP government will fully complete the implementation of this very important investment into our lives and save many lives, even those unborn.
“Completing these hospitals will not just help to save lives, but will also create many different jobs for the youth of Ghana.”
