At least every district in Ghana must have a category A SHS, Gov’t & Authorities must upgrade existing schools in various districts – Kwabena Owusu Dankwah (KOD)

Co-host of Kessben FM’s Maakye, Kwabena Owusu Dankwah (KOD), has appealed to the government and relevant authorities to ensure that every district in Ghana has at least one Category A Senior High School (SHS).

According to him, this move is crucial for bridging the inequality gap in access to quality secondary education across the country.

KOD emphasized that while some regions and metropolitan areas are fortunate to host multiple top-tier senior high schools, many districts continue to suffer from under-resourced institutions that limit the potential of brilliant students.

He argued that the current distribution of Category A schools is skewed, often forcing students in rural or less-developed districts to either travel far distances or miss out on the opportunity altogether.

He proposed that instead of building entirely new schools, the government and the Ghana Education Service (GES) should focus on upgrading existing schools in underserved districts. “Most of these districts already have functioning SHSs with committed teachers and students. What they lack are the resources, infrastructure, and recognition to reach Category A status,” Dankwah stated.

He noted that upgrading these schools would involve improving infrastructure, providing adequate learning materials, increasing teacher capacity, and enhancing facilities such as science labs, libraries, and dormitories.

Mr. Dankwah also highlighted that such an initiative would promote equitable education, reduce congestion in the few elite schools, and contribute to regional development by retaining talent and resources within local communities.
