Ghana Police Service Dismantles Armed Robbery Gang, Arrests 10 Suspects

In a major breakthrough, the Ghana Police Service has successfully dismantled a notorious armed robbery syndicate responsible for a series of bank robberies across the country. The operation, which was launched after analyzing a similar pattern in the robberies, took the police to several regions, including Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti.

At a press conference held at the National Police Headquarters, Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, disclosed that the police have arrested 10 suspects and recovered 14 weapons, including AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, and pistols.

The Operation

According to Mr. Yohuno, the operation was a result of sustained intelligence gathering and surveillance over a period of six months. The police were able to track down the suspects to various towns, including Esereso Adagya, Ejisu Achiaakrom, and Atonsu-Kyirapatre.

“We are delighted to announce that we have successfully dismantled the gang behind all these robberies,” Mr. Yohuno said. “We will not stop until we get all the suspects arrested and brought to justice.”

Banks Affected

The syndicate, believed to consist of about 15 persons, carried out bank robberies in the following institutions:

– Adansi Rural Bank/Fomena: April 10, 2025
– Lower Pra Rural Bank/Takoradi Inchaban: April 24, 2025
– Asokore Rural Bank/Asokwa: May 18, 2025
– Ahafo Kukom Rural Community Bank: May 30, 2025
– Nnwabiagya Rural Bank/Offinso: July 10, 2025
– Bosomtwi Rural Bank/Suntreso: July 18, 2025
– Kakum Rural Bank/Elmina: August 4, 2025
– MRB Bank/Winneba: August 15, 2025
– South Birim Rural Bank/Akim Asene: August 16, 2025
– Ecobank Ahafo Kenyasi Branch: September 8, 2025
– St. Martin De Pores Co-Op Credit Union/Atonsu Monaco: September 14, 2025

Exhibits Recovered

The police recovered a significant amount of exhibits, including:

– 3 AK-47 assault rifles
– 1 single-barrel gun
– 7 pump-action guns
– 96 rounds of AAA ammunition
– 3 Bruni pistols
– 1 M&P pistol
– Cash sum of GH¢18,845.00, 104 USD, 190 Liberian Dollars, 5,800 Niara, 31,000 CFA, and assorted GH¢ coins
– 6 vehicles
– 4 motorcycles
– Assorted mobile phones and jewelry

Investigation and Arrests

The police investigation revealed that the syndicate was led by Kwasi Agyei @ Cobra, who was arrested in his hideout at Esereso Adagya. Other suspects arrested include David Obuobi @ Wasty, Francis Acquah @ Preman, and Martin Akansina @ One Billion.

“We are grateful for the dedication and professionalism of the Ashanti Regional Commander and all the officers who contributed to this successful operation,” Mr. Yohuno said. “We call on all stakeholders and the general public to continue to support the police and report suspicious activities.”
