Coalition Against Galamsey: Conditions exist for State of Emergency – Ashigbey tells President Mahama

Dr. Ken Ashigbey, the convener of the Coalition Against Galamsey, Ghana, has encouraged the government to take decisive action, stating that the requirements for establishing a state of emergency in areas impacted by illegal mining are already met.Cultural Tours in Ghana.
Dr. Ashigbey reminded that although state institutions have been sluggish to take immediate action, President John Dramani Mahama himself has declared Galamsey a national emergency.
We are familiar with the president, and he is not the type to enforce harsh laws. Therefore, we think that we can be explicit about how we apply it and what we do in a case of emergency,” he said.
Dr. Ashigbey also mentioned forest reserves that are still affected by illicit mining activities in spite of limited reclamation efforts.
According to the president, they have recaptured roughly nine. Some of them have improved to amber from their previous red grading. However, people continue to demolish them. In order to prevent excavators from entering particular villages, you can even proclaim a state of emergency there,” he continued.
He maintained that the current level of environmental devastation satisfies the requirements for a national emergency, citing Article 39 of the Constitution as obvious justification.
According to the president himself, there is a national emergency because all of the requirements listed in Article 39 for such a situation are evident. “So, I’m not sure what the president isn’t hearing from national security,” he bemoaned.
