Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association to Enforce GIPC Act

The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has announced plans to begin enforcing the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, 2013 (Act 865), starting Monday, September 8, 2025. The Association aims to ensure strict compliance with Section 27 (1) of the Act, which prohibits non-citizens or enterprises not wholly owned by Ghanaians from engaging in retail trading, hawking, or selling goods in stalls or markets.
According to Takyi Addo, Director of Communications for the Association, the decision to enforce the Act comes after successive governments failed to ensure full compliance, resulting in a persistent drain on the businesses of Ghanaian traders. The Association believes it’s time to uphold the law and protect local enterprise from unlawful competition.
The enforcement exercise is expected to impact foreign nationals engaged in petty trading in commercial hubs like Abossey Okai. The Association emphasizes that its actions are not targeted at foreign investment in general but are meant to safeguard the interests of local businesses within the legal framework of the country.
The Association has called on all stakeholders, including relevant state institutions, to support the exercise as they work to preserve the integrity of Ghanaian trade and secure the future of indigenous businesses.
