I suggested that we should open up our delegates’ voter register to 1 million so that vote buying will be eliminated – Kwabena Agyapong

Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, aspirant for the NPP flagbearer, has proposed a significant reform to the party’s delegate system.
Speaking in an interview on Kessben FM with KOD, Ing Agyapong suggested that the party should open up its delegates’ voter register to one million people in order to eliminate vote buying and increase grassroots participation in leadership decisions.
“I suggested that we should open up our delegates’ voter register up to one million so that vote buying will be eliminated,” Agyapong stated during the interview, emphasizing that the current system incentivizes undue influence and corrupt practices.
Currently, the NPP, like many political parties in Ghana, uses a restricted delegate system to elect its presidential candidate. This typically involves a few thousand party executives and key stakeholders voting on behalf of millions of members. While this system is logistically simpler, it has come under increasing criticism for its susceptibility to vote buying, influence-peddling, and limited democratic engagement.
“If you have to buy a million people, that’s not just unfeasible, it’s a clear deterrent,” Agyapong explained. “It brings back the focus to policies, ideas, and integrity.”
Kwabena Agyapong, a former General Secretary of the NPP and a veteran in Ghanaian politics, has long been an advocate for reforms within the party. His flagbearer campaign has centered on values such as integrity, discipline, and transparency.
He believes that internal party democracy is the bedrock of national governance, and that reforming how political parties operate internally is critical for Ghana’s democratic development.
