Sacking of Justice Torkorno: Was Charlotte Osei’s sacking not a bad precedent too? – Frank Otuo Acheampong fires back at NPP over their “hypocrisy”

Frank Otuo Acheampong, a Communications Team Member of the ruling NDC, has sharply criticized the NPP’s “selective outrage” over recent developments involving the judiciary.

Following the removal or what some have called the “early retirement” of Chief Justice Torkornoo under the NDC administration, the NPP has been vocal in condemning the move. Party leaders have called it a “dangerous precedent,” arguing it undermines the independence of the judiciary and shakes the foundations of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

Speaking on Kessben FM, Acheampong hit back, stating “When the NPP removed former Electoral Commission boss Charlotte Osei, they celebrated it as lawful and necessary. Today, when the NDC government decides to follow due process regarding the judiciary, suddenly it’s a ‘bad precedent’? We cannot allow such political hypocrisy to fester.”

Charlotte Osei, who served as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, was dismissed under the Akufo-Addo-led NPP administration following recommendations from a committee set up by the Chief Justice. Her removal was based on allegations of procurement breaches,an action that drew significant criticism from civil society groups, legal experts, and international observers, though it was defended vigorously by the NPP at the time.

Acheampong drew a direct line between that controversial dismissal and the current outrage over Chief Justice Torkornoo’s removal, “They removed a sitting EC boss. That wasn’t a bad precedent? That didn’t shake public confidence? But now the same people claim moral high ground over the judiciary?”
