Road Minister Announces Full Payment of Contractor Debts on Pokuase-Nsawam Road Project, Set for completion by Q2 2026

Road Minister Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza has announced that the government has successfully paid all outstanding debts to contractors working on the critical Pokuase-Nsawam road project, removing a major financial obstacle that had been hampering progress on the vital arterial route.
Speaking during a project site visit by President Mahama on Wednesday, 3rd September, 2025, Minister Agbodza revealed the significant financial milestone achieved under the current administration, emphasizing the complete resolution of payment issues that had plagued the project.
“As of today, Mister President, every certificate owed the contractor on this project had been paid entirely. So we don’t owe the contractor any amount on this project,” Agbodza declared, highlighting the government’s commitment to clearing inherited debts.
The Minister explained the scale of the financial challenge that was inherited: “At the time you took office, the conductor raised a certificate of almost $78 million before NPP left power, and they did not pay. So it was surprising that just after you took office, people were expecting that what they could not do all over that period. You will do it. But guess what? Mister President, you did it.”
With the payment crisis resolved, Minister Agbodza expressed confidence in the project’s completion timeline, noting that physical progress stands at approximately 75% with financial performance slightly ahead of schedule.
“I want to hold the consultant to his work that by second quarter next year, this project should be completed, because the physical project progress is about 75% and then financial performance is even slightly ahead of that,” the Minister stated.
The Pokuase-Nsawam road serves as a crucial arterial route connecting Ghana’s two largest cities, handling heavy traffic volumes and serving thousands of daily commuters. The project’s completion is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on this vital corridor.
**Adequate Resources Secured**
Minister Agbodza assured that sufficient funding has been secured to see the project through to completion, with the contract now incorporated into the government’s ambitious infrastructure program.
“What it means is that there’s enough resource for the contractor to continue and complete this project,” he explained, adding that the government has allocated substantial resources – including 14 billion cedis this year and 30 billion cedis next year – to ensure major road projects receive adequate financial backing.
**Quality and Timeline Commitments**
While celebrating the financial breakthrough, the Minister also emphasized expectations for quality delivery and adherence to timelines.
“We are very grateful for your leadership, and hopefully, if the contractor continues at the pace at which they are working, we shouldn’t have any more difficulty almost up to the end of the project,” Agbodza concluded.
The Minister stressed the importance of maintaining traffic flow during the remaining construction phases while ensuring the use of quality materials to guarantee the road’s long-term durability.
The Pokuase-Nsawam road project is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2026, marking a significant infrastructure achievement for the current administration and providing much-needed relief to commuters along this critical route.
