Speaker of Parliament Announces Strategic Investment in Grassroots Football Development

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has unveiled an ambitious initiative to transform Ghana’s football landscape through strategic investment in physical education teachers across the country’s senior high schools.
Speaking during the presentation of the Democracy Cup to the President, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the far-reaching impact of the program, stating: “This intervention is not just symbolic. It is strategic. It is a deliberate effort to equip our fiscal education teachers with the skills and exposure needed to identify nature and develop young football talents from the grassroots.”
The initiative, which forms a key component of the 2025 Democracy Cup edition, will provide professional FIFA-certified training for physical education teachers in senior high schools across all 276 constituencies in Ghana.
“We’re trying to catch them young, Your Excellency,” Bagbin explained, highlighting the program’s focus on early talent identification and development at the grassroots level.
The Speaker described the Democracy Cup as more than just a sporting event, calling it “a Civic Platform, one that brings Parliament closer to the people by harnessing the unifying, energizing and cultural power of football to deepen trust in our democratic institutions.”
Bagbin noted that football in Ghana transcends mere sport, declaring: “Football in Ghana is not merely a sport. It is passion, it is identity. It is community. By linking parliament and football, we speak a language every Ghanaian understands.”
The 2025 Democracy Cup Grand Finale is scheduled for September 5, 2025, at the University of Ghana sports stadium, featuring matches between Parliament and the judiciary, as well as local giants Accra Great Olympics and Accra Hearts of Oak.
