Kofi Adu Domfeh Is Ashanti GJA Chairman-Elect…Wins Rerun With Bigger Margin

Story By Michael Ofosu-Afriyie, Kumasi

Mr Kofi Adu Domfeh, News editor of the Ashanti Region based Luv fm, an affiliate to the Multimedia Ghana Limited (MGL) brand last Friday won the Ashanti Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Chairmanship position during a rerun.

Mr Domfeh polled 20 votes out of the 31 that was cast in the election which had him contesting with a former secretary of the Association in Ashanti, Georgina Ama Ankumah, who managed to secure some 11 votes 🗳 at the end.

Background:
The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) just like the regional branches as well as the National Executive had its elections on 30th June, 2025.

The elections were held to choose regional and national executives to run both the local outfits and the National executive body for the next three years.

However, despite having conducted a clean poll on June 30th with results declared, a petition from Georgina Ankumah, the losing candidate in the Chairmanship race was filed with the GJA.

The GJA subsequently had the polls annulled for a disputed identity of one Portia Oforiwaa Ofori who voted in the June 30 election.

Mr Domfeh had won the contest with a one vote margin, garnering 16 votes as his sole contender also walked home with 15 votes.

The rerun verdict, being a result of the Election Dispute Adjudicating Committee (EDAC) investigation into the matter, therefore fixed the rerun for last Friday.

Commitment:
Speaking to the media after being declared winner by the Presiding Officer of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr E.T Odonkor, the Chairman-Elect thanked the Ashanti GJA members for the confidence they have reposed in him by electing him to serve for the next three years.

Mr Domfeh promised to lead a transformational administration that would lead to the registration of all persons who qualify to be members.

The new membership drive, he noted would ensure the association using its numbers positively to lobby for projects and programs that would ensure the development and orientation of members to become responsible journalists.

“My victory signifies a new dawn where all media practitioners including conventional and unconventional content creators would be registered and provided with the requisite orientation to practice responsible journalism”, Mr Domfeh stated.

GJA President:
Present to observe the elections was the GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor and some executives and staff of the Association.

He urged the newly elected executive in Ashanti to live up to expectations including intensifying a new membership drive.

He urged them to also look for an office to undertake operations and carry out duties.

He charged the new executive to ate least increase its membership base to 300 by their third year in office so they could use the numbers to lobby for projects and programmes.
