God forbid, If a President dies & he is a Christian, which church will host his burial service? – Charles Owusu stresses the need for Ghana’s National Cathedral

Lawyer Charles Owusu, legal representative for the National Cathedral of Ghana, has reignited public conversation on the importance of completing the controversial project.

Speaking on Kessben TV’s The Punch Show, Owusu asked: “God forbid, if a president falls (dies) and he is a Christian, which church will host his burial service?”

His rhetorical question was intended to underline the absence of a unified, state-sanctioned Christian facility in Ghana,  a country where Christianity remains the majority religion.

According to Owusu, the National Cathedral is not a partisan structure, but rather a national monument designed to fill a long-standing institutional gap.

Ghana has no official religion, but Christians make up over 70% of the population. Despite this, there is no single church building designated for national Christian events, whether they be funerals of heads of state, interdenominational thanksgiving services, or official state worship programs.

Charles Owusu argued that the National Cathedral would serve this purpose, providing a neutral, sacred space above denominational interests, much like national structures such as

Lawyer Owusu further explained that the National Cathedral was conceived not only as a place of worship, but as a spiritual, cultural, and educational hub.
